History
Your hair history is extremely useful for diagnosing hair problems, so it is important that you provide all the necessary information. Below is a list of questions, adapted from Diseases of the Hair and Nail by H. P. Baden, that the doctor may ask.
Present hair problem
- What is the nature of the problem?
- Which areas of the scalp are affected?
- Are other body areas affected?
- When did the problem begin?
- How many hairs do you lose each day?
- Is it coming off at the roots or breaking off?
- Is it stable, improving or worsening?
- Is it stable, improving or worsening?
- Have you noticed changes in your skin, nails or teeth? . Do you pull or twirl your hair?
Health problems
- List past illnesses, operations and hospitalizations.
- Do you have any present health problems?
- Has there been any significant weight change, emotional crisis or life changes (Le., marriage, divorce, shifting house, job changes) during the six months preceding the hair loss?
- Date of last pregnancy.
- Have you ever suffered from hair loss following delivery?
- Have you been on birth control pills before? If so, give dates.
- Have you noticed any change in menstruation?
- Do you suffer from diabetes or thyroid problems?
- Has there been any change in your tolerance to heat and cold?
- Do you have any unusual dietary habits?
Present hair care
1) Cleansing:
- Shampoo-what brand and frequency of use. . Conditioner-what brand and frequency of use.
2) Hair setting-do you use any of the following, and if so, how frequent?
- Permanent wave
- Electric hair-rollers
- Curling irons
- Hot combs
- Hair straightness
3) Hair colouring:
- Type-temporary tints/semi-permanent dyes/permanent dyes
- Frequency
- Do you bleach your hair?
4) Hair styling:
- Describe your usual hairstyle.
- Do you wear buns, braids (corn rowing), ponytails?
- Do you use elastics?
- Do you brush your hair every day?
- Do you use a hair dryer? If so, indicate whether you blow till the hair is half dried or completely dry?
- Do you use hair sprays? If so, give names.
Family history
Are there any illnesses that seem to run in your family?
Do any of the following suffer from hair problems? List down the ages of your parents, brothers and sisters and describe the condition of their hair.
